Maxtor follow-up

I finally got the disk out of its case, a delicate operation. It's a Seagate Barracuda. I plugged it into an Icy Box enclosure. The disk wasn't harmed and no data lost.
Maxtor? Hell no!

This is not an ativity log (ain't much going on anyway, too hot, vacations...) but more like a rant.
A couple years ago, my Maxtor drive crashed on me and I could not recover a single byte of data. That was upsetting to say the least. Urgently I had the drive replaced with a roomier one (turns out that was another Maxtor), and added an external Western Digital 120GB drive (very reliable, btw) which I divided into two partitions, one for backup, another for Linux which has been my main OS for a while (XP being there only as a fallback or for Windoze-only sotware such as Actinic).
I ordered a 500GB Maxtor OneTouch to store Photoshop artwork, hi-res photograph scans, and other design-related stuff and plugged it to my second-hand Mac. The drive has good reviews and it seemed like a good pick. It has been working fine for a few months... until a couple days ago.
Now the unit won't even power on (it has no on/off switch and normally powers on when the Mac is booted). I've read about similar experiences with Maxtor external drives and it's likely that something electrical fried in there. With a lil' bit o'luck, though, the drive might still be ok and no data lost.
Still under warranty, the drive could be sent back and replaced but I want all my immensely precious data back. And Maxtor is apparently charging an arm and a leg for data recovery anyway. So I'll take a chance and have a technician take the drive out of its case and plug it to see if my files are still there. This, no doubt, will void the warranty but it appears to be the only option. So that's that.
Yet another illustration of Murphy's Law or just mere bad luck, one might think. But one saying says "never 2 without 3." Well, from now on I'm staying away from that crap!
